ProGental – The 1st Dental Hygiene Clinic in Peru

What is the state of Dental Hygiene in Peru?

By finding out for multiple hours in various search engines online and not finding more information about basic dental care, we realized a possible answer to this question.  As is the case in most developing countries, Peru unfortunately has not had and has had sufficient resources and interests to provide and promote quality dental services to communities in need and dental hygiene services to the country.

WHO Oral Health Programme

In the big cities, idiosyncrasy and lack of preventive culture make many people think that the loss or extraction of teeth is a natural process that happens to them as they grow older. When society has become accustomed to seeing grandparents and parents losing their teeth without a replacement afterwards; they assume that this will also happen to them and that it is a natural process. This ideology is wrong. For optimum health we need to have a proper digestion that can only be performed when all of our dental pieces are in proper and complete operation. In other words, if a tooth is missing, the process of digestion will not be performed optimally.

The lack of knowledge and a preventive culture means that many people only visit the dentist in cases of extreme pain.  These people separate the two aspects of general health and oral health. It is proven that both go hand in hand.  If the mouth is not healthy, the patient may present different complications at a systematic level.  As complications with diabetes, high blood pressure, pneumonia, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s among others.

There are many dentists in Peru who do well when they treat patients who need endodontic treatment, crowns, extractions, implants, cosmetics, etc.  The cost of preventive treatment for a prophylaxis is minimal compared to what could be done by offering the other services. For this reason the dentist does not have the motivation to instruct and educate patients about the importance of periodic dental cleanings.

Any child or adult person needs to be evaluated and have a dental cleaning at least every 6 months.  Because every time we eat we generate plaque, if this plaque is not removed effectively it will generate more plaque which is bacteria accumulated and as the days go by it will solidify generating tartar.  The tartar adheres to the teeth and is very difficult to remove with the toothbrush.  A dental cleaning removes these tartar deposits which is bacteria that only grow under and over the gums causing inflammation, bleeding, bad breath, and even could lead to the development of periodontal disease.

ProGental is the first and only dental clinic in Peru that came to promote a preventive culture in Peruvian society.  Bringing all the knowledge acquired in the United States, with experience in the dental field for more than 10 years.  We are committed to offering the most optimal dental hygiene service while performing the same protocol as it is practiced in the USA.  Our specialists are committed to educating and promoting the preventive culture for the dental benefit of this generations as well as future generations.

Unlike dentists offering the same service we are proud to offer the following additional services at the same or lower cost than a dentist here in Peru:

  • The length of your appointment may vary from 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  • You will have an oral cancer screening exam.
  • Complete evaluation of teeth and gums (you will know how healthy your gums are and how to improve and prevent gum disease).
  • Manual and ultrasonic dental cleaning (in some cases, if gingivitis and / or periodontitis is present, deep cleansing is recommended).• Polishing of teeth to remove stains.
  • Fluoride treatment for the prevention of tooth decay and tooth sensitivity.
  • Demonstration of correct dental brushing and flossing.

Our main objective is that all of our patients know and understand the importance of their good oral health; this in return will lead them to share the knowledge acquired to family and friends.  This will generate and create a new culture with the importance of prevention in mind and help prevent diseases that may become irreversible, such as periodontitis.
